Song Story....
It was more than a year-and-a-half ago that I sat down in my office and penned the words to a chorus titled, “Even In This.” I remember the time well, as it was prior to our youngest son’s birth. The chorus reads,
“Even in this, Lord I’ll praise You
Even in this, Lord, I’ll worship You
Even in this, Lord I’ll trust you
____________________________”
The blank line represents the final line of the chorus, which at that point was unwritten.
Since then, and at many different times, I tried to finish the song. I wrote multiple verses, bridges, and alternate lines. I used various chords and melodies, but none stuck. Sometimes a song only goes so far, and it’s done - although not ‘done!’
Last week all that changed when some friends experienced a hardship like none other they had ever endured. Shortly thereafter I sat at the piano and began to sing the chorus again.
The first breakthrough for the song happened in the chorus - where there was a blank line, now I had:
“It’s easy to say I believe, but now You’ve made me a believer even in this.”
Ahh, our faith is tested and revealed in a trial, where we go from saying to living out a belief.
Then the first verse materialized:
“You taught me to believe, even when I can’t see -
The light at the end of my tunnel
Although my faith may fail, I know You never will”
And the pre-chorus:
“So even when I’m struggling, and holding by a thread
I am learning You are always in my brokenness”
Then verse 2:
“I know the day will come when I will see
What You worked for my good, and Your glory
But right now I’m full of doubt
That even You can work this out”
Pre-chorus 2:
“Lord, You know I’m struggling, and hanging by a thread
Is it true that You are here in my brokenness?”
And finally today the bridge....
“When I felt like giving in, like I couldn’t take any more
I didn’t fully understand You were always there
No, You never left my side as I crumbled and I cried
You were only waiting for me to surrender”
So now the song (completed) looks like this:
V1 You taught me to believe, even when I can’t see -
The light at the end of my tunnel
Although my faith may fail, I know You never will
Pre1 So even when I’m struggling, and holding by a thread
I am learning You are always in my brokenness
C1 Even in this, Lord I’ll praise You
Even in this, Lord I’ll worship You
Even in this Lord, I trust You
It’s easy to say I believe, but please make me a believer even in this
V2 I know the day will come when I will see
What You worked for my good, and Your glory
But right now I’m full of doubt
That even You can work this out
Pre2 Lord, You know I’m struggling, and hanging by a thread
Is it true that You are here in my brokenness
C2 Even in this, Lord I’ll praise You
Even in this, Lord I’ll worship You
Even in this Lord, I trust You
It’s easy to say I believe, but I’m becoming a believer
Br When I felt like giving in, like I couldn’t take any more
I didn’t fully understand You were right there
No, You never left my side as I crumbled and I cried
You were only waiting for me to surrender
C3 Even in this, Lord I’ll praise You
Even in this, Lord I’ll worship You
Even in this Lord, I trust You
It’s easy to say I believe, but now You’ve made me a believer even in this
